Leucan is launching the 2009 edition of the one and only Shaved Head Challenge!

Montreal, March 31, 2009 — Today at 1:00 p.m. Leucan launched the 6th provincial edition of the one and only Shaved Head Challenge at Place des Arts, in collaboration with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

Stéphane Lévesque, bassoonist for the Orchestra, along with his group consisting of Jean-François Rivest, conductor in residence, and seven of their colleagues have displayed their boldness but above all their solidarity by having their heads shaved on-site and in public.

Over 25 shaving locations throughout Quebec on the prominent day of the Challenge
Initiated in 2001 in Montérégie by Mr. Serge Tremblay, the Shaved Head Challenge will take place on Sunday, June 7, 2009 simultaneously at more than 25 shaving locations throughout Quebec. In the Greater Montreal area, the event will be held at Carrefour Laval, Fairview Pointe Claire, and Galeries d’Anjou. However, the Shaved Head Challenge can be experienced everyday starting now in some regions as well as in groups, since it is possible to organize your own Challenge at any chosen date, in your company, school, or organization.

Make a difference for the children

Actress Michèle Barbara Pelletier has generously accepted to be affiliated with the Shaved Head Challenge as provincial spokesperson for the second consecutive year. In fact, she had her head shaved last year for the Leucan children and collected over $10,000: “The Shaved Head Challenge is more than a fundraising campaign. It’s a gesture of solidarity toward children with cancer, a small gesture that means so much to them. Whether you have brown, blue, or curly hair, we invite you to show your solidarity and to participate to the Shaved Head Challenge. Also, certain conditions applying, your hair can be donated for the making of wigs: two good deeds in one!”

Leucan shaved close to 7,300 heads and collected over 3.8 million dollars for children with cancer in 2008. This year, the Association hopes to outdo last year’s results for its 30th anniversary. But for Leucan, the primary goal in collecting funds during this event is to allow generous contributions to clinical research, which further increases the chances of recovery, as well as to provide the many services offered to cancer-stricken children and their families: welcome, emotional support and follow-up, financial assistance, massage therapy, hosting and support services in playrooms, socio-recreational activities, school life services as well as end-of-life and bereavement follow-up.

Leucan wishes to thank the provincial sponsors for the 2009 edition: Fédération des producteurs d’œufs de consommation du Québec, Groupe Jean Coutu, Ombrelle, and Schick.

Leucan, which receives no government grants, is a non-profit organization founded in 1978. For 30 years, its mission has been to enhance the well-being, healing and recovery of children with cancer, and to ensure support for their families. Besides its head office in Montreal, Leucan has nine regional management committees and more than 7,000 members throughout Quebec.
