Financial Support for Research
Leucan provides nearly one million dollars annually to the four pediatric oncology centres for research: Sainte-Justine UHC, Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre, Centre mère-enfant du CHUQ and CHUS. This financial aid is of the utmost importance in the provisioning of support services by Leucan, since clinical research—by helping better understand the mechanisms involved in cancer’s evolution and by reducing side effects as well as sequelae caused by treatment—gives access to the best existing treatment protocols and helps improve the chances of a cure for children with cancer.
Moreover, thanks to the past 40 years of research, progress in treating pediatric cancers has been substantial. In Canada, for all childhood cancers combined, the five-year survival is estimated to be 82%–an increase of 11% over 15 years*.
