Financial Support for Research

'' Leucan and its many volunteers deserve our congratulations for the excellent support they provide to patients and their families across the province and to the research initiated by the medical staff of our university network. Even though great progress has been made in our understanding and treatment of pediatric cancers, we continue to lose too many battles. Leucan's excellent work must be praised. We are all extremely appreciative.'' - N.Blair Whittemore M.D. FRCPC, Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Montreal Children's Hospital

Though essential to ensure the quality of care delivered to cancer-stricken children, clinical research is not funded by the State.
To make up for this shortfall, Leucan is the primary funder of clinical trials in the province.

In 2014-15, the Association allocated $894,813 to clinical research conducted in the province’s pediatric oncology centres:

In this way, Leucan contributes to improvements in the quality of care and to the increase in the recovery and survival rate of children treated for cancer. In fact, the survival rate has gone up from 15 to 82%, a promising and hopeful increase.

Since its establishment in 1978, Leucan contributed nearly $14.4 million to clinical research.

Thanks to clinical research, we:

  • Have a better understanding of the evolution process of cancer;
  • Can reduce the side-effects and sequelae of treatments;
  • Have access to the best treatment protocols available and;
  • Increase the chances of survival for cancer-stricken children.
