Volunteering in Support Services for Children with Cancer and their Families
This type of volunteering can take place at the hospital, at school, or during a socio-recreational activity depending on the volunteer’s aptitudes and interests. Leucan has developed a training program to ensure that volunteers are well prepared to respond to the special needs of these children and their families. If needed, appropriate training in helping relationship and relevant conferences can be added to this training.
Childminding at the Hospital
A volunteer can allow parents whose child is hospitalized to take a breather and regain some energy while taking time out for themselves. In order to create a bond of trust, we encourage maintaining the volunteer/child team during visits at the hospital. Support for parents and volunteers is ensured by the person in charge of Leucan’s welcome, emotional assistance and support services after each hospital visit.
School Life
Following appropriate training within the school life services, a volunteer is better able to communicate information to primary school students from kindergarten to sixth grade. Leucan suggests awareness meetings of 20 to 60 minutes to examine the different aspects of the illness using school activities adapted to different age groups. These activities take into account programs initiated by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport.
Socio-recreational Activities
A volunteer can participate in the logistics and the organizing of a variety of activities offered to children and their families (family picnics, outings, respite camps, etc.).They can also take part in two main events: Leucan-CSN Summer Camp and the Christmas party.
